Theme 2024: “Create Awareness about the Magic Mixture” |

I. Overview:

World ORS Day is observed annually on July 29 to highlight the importance of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) in preventing and treating dehydration, especially due to diarrhoeal diseases. ORS is a simple, cost-effective solution that has saved millions of lives worldwide. The day aims to raise awareness about the benefits and proper use of ORS, particularly in regions with limited access to healthcare.

II. Significance of the Theme 2025:

The 2025 theme emphasizes the need to educate communities about the life-saving potential of ORS. By spreading knowledge about this “magic mixture,” the campaign seeks to ensure that more people understand its importance, leading to increased usage and a reduction in dehydration-related deaths

III. What is ORS ?

Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) is a scientifically formulated mixture of glucose, sodium, potassium, and other electrolytes dissolved in clean water. It is used to prevent and treat dehydration caused by diarrhoea, vomiting, or other conditions. ORS works by enhancing the absorption of fluids and electrolytes in the intestines, effectively rehydrating the body.

IV. Quick Facts about ORS:

  1. Life-Saving Impact: ORS has been instrumental in reducing child mortality rates due to diarrhoeal diseases.
  2. Cost-Effective Solution: ORS is an affordable treatment, making it accessible in low-resource settings.
  3. Easy to Administer: ORS can be prepared and administered at home, requiring no specialized equipment.
  4. Recommended by WHO and UNICEF: Global health organizations endorse ORS as the primary treatment for dehydration caused by diarrhoea.
  5. Combination with Zinc: When used with zinc supplements, ORS is even more effective in treating diarrhoeal diseases.
  6. Global Reach: Despite its benefits, only a fraction of children worldwide have access to ORS when needed.
  7. Educational Importance: Raising awareness about ORS can lead to increased usage and save more lives.

V. A Brief History of ORS:

  • 1960s: ORS was developed by researchers seeking an effective treatment for dehydration caused by diarrhoea.
  • 1971: Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis successfully used ORS to treat cholera patients during the Bangladesh Liberation War, saving thousands of lives.
  • 2001: The Indian Academy of Pediatrics established World ORS Day to promote the use of ORS in preventing dehydration-related deaths.
  • 2004: WHO and UNICEF recommended ORS as a primary treatment for childhood diarrhoea.
  • 2019: WHO added co-packaged ORS and zinc to its list of essential medicines.

VI. How to Observe World ORS Day ?

  • Educational Campaigns: Organize workshops and seminars to educate communities about the preparation and benefits of ORS.
  • Distribute ORS Packets: Provide free ORS packets in schools, clinics, and community centers.
  • Social Media Awareness: Use platforms to share information, testimonials, and the importance of ORS using hashtags like #WorldORSDay.
  • Collaborate with Healthcare Providers: Encourage doctors and nurses to educate patients about ORS during consultations.
  • School Programs: Implement educational programs in schools to teach children about the importance of hydration and ORS
