World Retina Day - September 28

Theme 2025: “No official theme has been announced”

I. Overview:

World Retina Day is observed annually on September 28 to raise awareness about retinal health and the impact of retinal diseases on vision. Established by Retina International, the day aims to educate the public about the importance of eye health and the challenges faced by individuals with retinal conditions.

II. Significance of the theme 2024:

The theme “Patient Perspective in Decision Making” emphasizes involving patients in research, clinical trials, and healthcare policies. It highlights the need for patient-centered advocacy, access to treatment, and informed participation in retinal disease decision-making.

III. What is a Retina?

The retina is a thin layer of light-sensitive tissue located at the back of the eye. Retina plays a critical role in vision by converting light that enters the eye into electrical signals, which are then transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve. The brain interprets these signals as visual images.

V. A Brief History of Retina Day:

2015: Retina International adopted September 28 as the official date for World Retina Day.

2024: The theme for 2024 is “Patient Perspective in Decision Making.”
