World Alzheimer’s Day – September 21

More than 55 million people worldwide are living with dementia today. This year’s theme, “Ask About Dementia,” urges us to start conversations, ask questions, and deepen our understanding. By breaking the silence, we can reduce stigma, promote early diagnosis, and create stronger support systems for individuals and caregivers alike.

I. Overview

World Alzheimer’s Day is observed annually on September 21 to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Established in 1994 by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI), the day aims to challenge the stigma surrounding dementia and promote understanding and support for those affected.

II. Significance of the Theme:

As of now, the official theme for World Alzheimer’s Day 2025 has not been announced. Each year, the theme focuses on specific aspects of dementia awareness, aiming to highlight challenges and promote solutions to achieve better outcomes for those affected.

III. What is Alzheimer ?

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s disease is a form of dementia that impacts memory, thinking, and behavior, with symptoms that gradually worsen over time and ultimately disrupt the ability to carry out everyday activities. The day serves as a platform to educate the public, promote early diagnosis, and advocate for policies that support individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.

IV. Quick Facts about Alzheimer: 💡

  1. Over 55 million people worldwide live with dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease accounting for 60-70% of cases.

  2. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia and is a leading cause of disability and dependency among older people globally.

  3. 1 in 3 older adults dies with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.

  4. The global cost of dementia is estimated at over $1 trillion annually, encompassing healthcare expenses and lost productivity.

  5. Forecasting predicts that dementia will reach 78 million people globally by 2030

V. A Brief History of World Alzheimer’s Day:

1994: World Alzheimer’s Day was established by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) to mark its 10th anniversary.

2009: The first World Alzheimer Report was released, providing comprehensive global data on dementia.

2012: World Alzheimer’s Month was introduced, expanding the campaign to the entire month of September.

2024: The theme “Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’s” emphasized the importance of understanding dementia and supporting those affected.

2025: The theme “Ask About Dementia,”  calls for open conversations and questions to foster greater understanding and support among the community. 

VI. How to Observe World Alzheimer’s Day ?

  • Wear Purple: Show your support by wearing purple, the official color for Alzheimer’s awareness.

  • Share Information: Use social media platforms to spread awareness using hashtags like #WorldAlzheimersDay.

  • Participate in Events: Join local or virtual events focused on Alzheimer’s awareness and support.

  • Support Caregivers: Offer assistance and appreciation to those caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s.

  • Donate: Contribute to organizations dedicated to Alzheimer’s research and support services.
