World Environmental Health Day – September 26

Environmental factors contribute to nearly 24% of global deaths and 28% of deaths among children under 5 years, according to the WHO. Healthy environment is fundamental to preventing disease, promoting public health, and ensuring sustainable development.

Theme 2025: “Clean Air, Healthy People”


I. Overview:

World Environmental Health Day (WEHD) is observed annually on September 26 to raise awareness about the crucial role of environmental health in public well-being. Established by the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH), the day emphasizes the impact of environmental factors such as air quality, water safety, and waste management on human health.

II. Significance of the theme:

The 2025 theme underscores the direct link between air quality and public health. Poor air quality contributes to a range of health issues, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and increased mortality rates. By focusing on clean air.

III. What is Environmental Health ?

Environmental health is a branch of public health that focuses on the interrelationships between people and their environment. It aims to promote human health and well-being by fostering a safe and healthful environment. This includes efforts to control environmental factors that can potentially affect health, such as air and water quality, hazardous waste, and chemical exposures.

IV. Quick Facts about Environmental Health: 💡

  • Air pollution is responsible for over 6.5 million deaths each year worldwide.
  • WHO reports that 99% of people worldwide breathe polluted air exceeding guideline limits, with the highest exposures in LMICs.
  • Nearly 90% of urban residents globally are exposed to air pollution.
  • Air pollution and birth outcomes are linked as global public health concerns.

V. A Brief History of World Environmental Health Day :

2011: The International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) declared September 26 as World Environmental Health Day to highlight the importance of environmental health.

2015: The United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, recognizing the role of environmental health in achieving SDGs.

2024: This theme focused on “Creating Resilient Communities through Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation”.

2025: Current theme “Clean Air, Healthy People” was chosen to address the growing concerns about air pollution and its impact on public health.

 

VI. How to Observe World Environmental Health Day? :

  • Educational Campaigns: Organize seminars, webinars, and workshops to educate the public about the importance of clean air and environmental health.
  • Community Clean-Up Drives: Participate in or organize local clean-up events to reduce pollution and promote environmental stewardship.
  • Advocacy: Support policies and initiatives aimed at improving air quality and protecting public health.
  • Social Media Engagement: Use platforms to spread awareness and encourage others to take action for cleaner air.
  • Personal Actions: Adopt practices such as reducing vehicle emissions, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable products to improve air quality.
