It serves as a call to action for individuals to become donors and for professionals to continue their dedicated efforts in facilitating life-saving transplants.

III. What is Organ Donation ?

Organ donation involves giving an organ or tissue to help someone who needs a transplant. Organs can be donated by living donors or after death, depending on the organ and the circumstances. Commonly donated organs include the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, and intestines

  1. One donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation.
  2. Tissues like corneas, skin, and bones can enhance the lives of many more individuals.
  3. Anyone, regardless of age or medical history, can register to be an organ donor.
  4. Green ribbons are internationally recognized symbols for organ donation awareness.
  5. Organ donation rates vary globally, with some countries adopting “opt-out” systems to increase donations.
  6. Living donors can donate a kidney or a portion of their liver, lung, or pancreas.
  7. Public awareness and education are crucial in increasing organ donation registrations.

V. A Brief History of Organ Donation :

  • 1954: The first successful living donor kidney transplant was performed in the USA.
  • 1994: India enacted the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, recognizing brain death and legalizing organ donation after death.
  • 2010: India began observing National Organ Donation Day on November 27.
  • 2023: India shifted its National Organ Donation Day to August 3 to commemorate the country’s first successful deceased organ donation in 1994.
  • 2025: The global theme “Answering the Call” highlights the collective responsibility in organ donation

  • Register as an organ donor through official platforms or local health authorities.
  • Wear a green ribbon to show support and raise awareness.
