Theme 2025: “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”

I. Overview:

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is observed annually on September 10. Established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in collaboration with the WHO, the day aims to raise awareness about suicide prevention globally.

II. Significance of the Theme 2025:

The triennial theme for 2024–26, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”, emphasizes the importance of transforming societal perceptions of suicide. It advocates for open conversations, empathy, and support, aiming to shift from a culture of silence to one of understanding and proactive prevention.

WSPD serves to:

  • Raise awareness about suicide and its prevention.

  • Advocate for policies and practices that reduce suicide risk factors.

  1. Over 700,000 people die by suicide annually worldwide.
  2. Suicide is among the leading causes of death for individuals aged 15–29.
  3. Certain populations experience Approximately 73% of global suicides occur in LMICs due to various factors.
  4. Over 73% of global suicides occur in LMICs
  5. Men are more likely to die by suicide, while women are more likely to attempt suicide
  6. Suicide is not inevitable. Many individuals who experience suicidal thoughts can be helped through timely intervention, support, and treatment.

2003: The first World Suicide Prevention Day is launched by IASP and WHO.

2004–23: Annual themes address various aspects of suicide prevention, such as “Creating Hope Through Action” and “Working Together to Prevent Suicide.”

2024–26: The triennial theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” is introduced to promote open dialogue and reduce stigma.

VI. How to Observe World Suicide Prevention Day

  • Educate: Learn about the warning signs of suicide and how to respond.
  • Engage: Participate in community events or online campaigns promoting suicide prevention.
  • Support: Reach out to individuals who may be struggling and offer a listening ear.
  • Advocate: Promote mental health resources and advocate for policies that support mental well-being.
  • Illuminate: Light a candle near a window at 8 PM to show support for suicide prevention and to remember those lost to suicide.
