I. Overview
World Toilet Day (WTD) is observed yearly on November 19 to spotlight the global sanitation crisis and to raise awareness about the global sanitation crisis and the importance of access to safe toilets for all. The day was first promoted by the World Toilet Organization (WTO) in 2001, and later adopted as an official UN observance in 2013.
II. Significance of the Theme 2025
The theme for 2025 is “Sanitation in a changing world”. It emphasises that toilets must be accessible to everyone, built to withstand climate shocks, and backed by sustained investment and systems. The day seeks to break the taboo around toilets and inspire collective action to ensure that everyone has access to safe, clean, and functional sanitation facilities – a basic human right.
III. What is the Sanitation?
Sanitation refers to the safe management of human excreta, including toilets/latrines, waterborne waste, and treatment systems. Lack of sanitation leads to environmental contamination, spread of disease, and breaches in dignity and safety.
IV. Quick Facts about World Toilet Day
- Over 3.5 billion people lack safely managed sanitation services (WHO/UNICEF).
- More than 420 million still practice open defecation.
- More people have mobile phones than toilets in the world.
- Poor sanitation causes over 1.5 million deaths annually, primarily due to diarrheal diseases, cholera, and typhoid.
- Lack of toilets exposes women and girls to gender-based violence, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and menstrual hygiene challenges.
- Access to safe toilets can reduce diarrheal disease incidence by 30–40% and soil-transmitted helminth infections by 50%.
- Lack of toilet privacy and safety contributes to stress, anxiety, and reduced school attendance among women and adolescents.
V. A Brief History of World Toilet Day
2001: The idea of World Toilet Day originated with Jack Sim, founder of the WTO.
2002-2012: The WTO continued to campaign for official global recognition.
2013: The UN General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/67/291, designating November 19 as an official UN day for sanitation access.
2014: “Equality and Dignity” was the theme which calls for how toilets protect privacy, dignity, and safety especially for women and girls.
2024: The theme “Sanitation for All – Leaving No One Behind” reinforces inclusivity and universal sanitation access.
2025: Current theme focuses on adapting sanitation systems for a rapidly changing world, climate resilience, and sustainable waste management.
