I. Overview
Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) is observed every year throughout the month of October to raise global awareness about breast cancer and its its risk factors, early detection, innovations in treatment, and support for those affected. The pink ribbon serves as the universal symbol of breast cancer awareness, representing hope, solidarity, and the fight against breast cancer.
The first official BCAM was founded by the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries (now AstraZeneca) to promote mammography as a key tool in early detection.
II. Importance of the Month
“Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters”, was recognized as month’s theme which acknowledges that each breast cancer experience is personal and distinct. The initiative emphasizes screening, education, research, and support for patients and survivors.
III. What is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer develops when breast cells grow uncontrollably, forming a tumour that may invade surrounding tissue or metastasize to other parts of the body. Early detection, screening (such as mammography), and advances in treatment have significantly improved survival. BC is very common as 1 in 4 cancers diagnosed among women.
