I. Overview
Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day (MBC) is observed on October 13 to focus attention on stage IV (metastatic) breast cancer, a cancer that has spread beyond the breast to other organs. This day is embedded within Breast Cancer Awareness Month but specifically highlights the distinct challenges faced by people living with metastatic disease.
II. Significance of the Day:
This day recognizes the unique needs, struggles, and lived experience of people with MBC. It calls for more dedicated research, funding, and innovation directed at metastatic disease, which historically receives a smaller proportion of research resources. It also focues on supporting community, advocacy, and policy efforts to ensure equitable access to care, symptom management, palliative support, and clinical trials.
III. What is MBC?
Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC), or stage IV breast cancer, occurs when malignant breast cancer cells spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body such as bones, lungs, liver, brain, or lymph nodes. Because of this spread, MBC is considered incurable, though treatments aim to control disease, alleviate symptoms, and improve quality of life. People with MBC often require lifelong, evolving therapies and supportive care. It is symbolized by tricolor ribbon where:
Pink – Breast cancer awareness
Teal – Spiritual healing and awareness
Green – Renewal, hope, and life
IV. Quick Facts about MBC:
- Metastasis means process of cancer spreading inside body parts.
- Around 30% odiagnosed with early-stage breast cancer develop MBC.
- Many people live long, productive lives with MBC.
- Thier is NO CURE for MBC.
- The #LightUpMBC campaign lights up landmarks worldwide in pink, green & teal to raise awareness.
V. A Brief History of MBD day:
2009: Established first by Metastatic Breast Cancer Network (MBCN).
2010-14: Awareness begins spreading internationally; patient-led campaigns emphasize “Stage IV Needs More.”
2015: METAvivor launches large-scale advocacy for equitable funding; #LightUpMBC begins taking shape.
2024: Campaigns highlight“Living with Hope and Resilience”and continued investment in metastatic research.
2025: Advocacy shifts toward policy change, patient navigation, and equitable access to novel therapies.
VI. How to Observe MBC Day?
