I. Overview
World Cities Day (WCD) is observed annually on October 31 to promote global urbanization awareness and foster international cooperation for sustainable urban development. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013, the day aims to encourage collaboration in addressing urban challenges and opportunities that arise from rapid urbanization.
The observance aligns with the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, which envisions cities that are inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. What this really means is recognising that more than half the world’s population now lives in urban areas, and cities face both major opportunities and big challenges in the 21st century.
II. Significance of the Theme
Each year, World Cities Day adopts a specific theme under the general concept “Better City, Better Life.” Urban areas play a central role in advancing economic growth, reducing inequality, and tackling the climate crisis.
III. What is Urbanization?
Urbanization refers to the process through which populations shift from rural to urban settings, leading to the growth and expansion of cities. While it fosters innovation, employment, and cultural exchange, it also presents challenges such as housing shortages, pollution, and social inequality.
Sustainable urbanization focuses on ensuring that this growth benefits all citizens, balancing economic opportunities with environmental protection and social equity.
IV. Quick Facts about Peer Support
